Are you aged 18-25 and have an interest in photography or heritage? Ampersand Projects are looking for two volunteers to get involved with the Built to Last: Austin Village at 100 project. The opportunity is open to those looking to develop their career in heritage or the arts and to gain experience in working with communities.

In collaboration with documentary photographer and artist Stephen Burke, the project will celebrate the history of Austin Village, a unique prefabricated village in Longbridge, Birmingham, in its centenary year and examine its evolution over 100 years, through the memories and lives of its current residents. This is an opportunity to work closely with a community to help them document and share their heritage and stories and mark a milestone year in their history.

How you can get involved

As a volunteer, you can work with Ampersand Projects in the following areas:

  • Work with the community to help collect and share stories, conducting oral history interviews with current and former residents;
  • Being involved in the development of an new online archive and exhibition, preserving documents, photographs and memorabilia digitally.

What you will receive

  • Training in oral history interviewing techniques, provided by an Oral History Society approved trainer;
  • A documentary photography workshop from artist Stephen Burke;
  • Digital skills and social media training from Ampersand Projects and the opportunity to co-produce the digital archive with Ampersand Projects and the Austin Village community;
  • Input into the production of the final exhibition;
  • Developmental advice and guidance from Ampersand Projects Directors
  • Travel expenses paid

Volunteering with us is flexible; we’re looking for people who can support the project for around 1 - 2 days per month between November 2017 and January 2018.
